Start on a topic in a limited way and progress into greater depth.
Can be between grades (i.e. topic is approached summarily in grade 11 and expanded upon in grade 12)
Within grades (i.e. if the students don't have the foundation they are meant to and therefore you also have to teach previous grade's material). Many times the grade 9 and 10 science course is focused on really big ideas that simply try to enable the students to relate to science in the society. (Therefore, you will have to be prepared to review concepts they were meant to be exposed to in these courses)
Gradually ramp up the expectations of the students (i.e. first stage: give formula sheets with information about what the formulas are for, second stage: just give formulas, third stage: don't give formulas).
Multiepisodic Classes:
Use a variety of approaches in a class (i.e. lecture, group work, mini lab, demonstration, etc.
Think, Pair, Share

find the person with a similar topic
share together the way you are going to approach teaching the subject
Think, Pair, Square
Then each pair will teach another pair and vice versa
